From last six thousand years Emerald has been a gem of fascination in many cultures. Emerald comes from Greek word “Smaragdos” which means green stone. This stone is currently the most valuable stone in the world by weight. According to Indian mythology, the name of this stone was first translated from Sanskrit as “marakata” meaning “the green of growing things”.

Emerald gemstone was believed to be an enormously powerful stone in different ways in many cultures. The Chaldeans believed that the emerald brings goodness into one’s life. According to ancient Egyptians belief emerald has been a symbol of fidelity. It was also considered that this gemstone would keep a woman chaste. From ancient times this stone was worn and prized by royal people and celebrities. In the first century BC, Ptolemy, the king of Egypt, presented Lucullus his portrait which was engraved with emerald.

In the Islamic faith green is the holy color and states that belong to Arab consider green banners as the symbol of unity. In the Catholic Church, green has a special meaning as well, since it has always been considered the most natural and elementary color in liturgy. In China emeralds are considered as good luck and people used to wear it on Thursday. Roman believed that light colored Emeralds are unripe and becomes a darker shade of green as it matures.

In past time it was believed that if the heart of a person is loyal, the Emerald would glow in a beautiful green color, but if the heart was went astray, it would turn a different lifeless color. It was also believed in the ancient time that Emerald improves one’s memory and intelligence. In various languages it was also stated that emeralds enable people to tell fortune events and to reveal what was true or false and was said to be a sure antidote for enchantments and spells.

Astrologically Emerald gemstone is birthstone for the month of May and is believed to bestow happiness on married couples. Emeralds endorse loyalty and faithfulness. These gemstones are always considered as a gift to enhance a strong relationship.
